The eighth Practitioner-Scholars Roundtable will focus on Patricia Cruz Marín’s research on the Inter-American System on Human Rights (IASHRs) and its positive impact in the fight against forced disappearance in Latin America. Her research assesses the positive impact achieved in the legislation, policies, and accountability mechanisms on enforced disappearance in these countries, explains the intermittent nature of this impact, and points out to the fundamental role of civil society in achieving – even building the conditions – for this impact to be possible. The research project was supported by funding and advice from ActInCourts (courtesy of a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada). The panelists will be:
- Patricia Cruz Marín (Yale Law School) is the author presenting her research. She is a Mexican lawyer and political scientist currently pursuing a J.S.D. at Yale Law School, where she also obtained her LL.M. degree in 2020. From 2020-2021, Patricia was a Bernstein Fellow at the Center for Justice International Law (CEJIL), representing victims of human rights violations at the Inter-American System.
- Francisco Quintana is the Program Director for the Andean, North America and Caribbean Region at Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL).
- Laurel E. Fletcher is a Clinical Professor of Law at UC Berkeley, School of Law where she directs the International Human Rights Law Clinic.
- Lisa Sundstrom (Moderator) is Principal Investigator of the ActInCourts Network, and Professor of Political Science, University of British Columbia.
